Detailed description

Picture "Potatoes I" (2011)

The background scene of the drawing quotes the painting "The Potato Eaters" by Vincent van Gogh. The idea for the picture came about when I encountered a group of young women after visiting the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, which provided an emotional contrast to what I had seen before. I also created a second, larger version of this motif in a modified color scheme. I used glazing, liquid acrylic paints, partly mixed with ink, applied with a brush on handmade paper. The size of the handmade paper with the drawing is 40 x 33 cm, supplied with a 50 x 40 cm passe-partout.

About Ralf Schmidt

There is a dialog between my works: you have "saved" the works you have already created, and when you create a work, the idea for the next work automatically forms in the back of your mind.
In my works, I try to make the inside visible through the outside: just as in some paintings outer landscapes are inner landscapes, my externally detailed depictions of people/things represent inner realities. People "on their way" or taking a decisive step from one stage of life to another are a recurring motif in my work.
