Object and space compete for supremacy here, but the action itself takes place outside the picture. The viewer is inclined to imagine a devastating scene from which this is the resolving result. The colors merely play a supporting role and thus appear so natural. But there is much more to it than that. In some places, juxtapositions of seemingly incompatible colors are densely packed and create interesting color illusions. Other areas form a highly structured third dimension in which light plays its part in keeping this painting alive and in motion. Brushstrokes, blobs, splashes and seemingly uncontrolled smudges are so varied that there are always more to be found and they never tire.
